Dell to launch sub-$500 AMD laptop next month

Sources in Asia have spilled the beans on Dell's plan to offer a $500 notebook …

Dell recently lost the top spot in worldwide market share to competitor HP, but the company is trying to regain its spot as King of the Hill with new products featuring AMD processors.

Digitimes is reporting that contract manufacturers in Asia have confirmed that 500,000 notebooks with AMD Turion processors will be available through Dell beginning next month. Dell, always known for low prices, will try to win over the value crowd with a sub-$500, 15-inch laptop. A 17-inch model will follow next year.

In addition to emphasizing its low prices, Dell wants the world to know that it has grown serious about energy-efficiency. Speaking at OracleWorld on Monday, Michael Dell told the crowd, "We estimate that if the energy-smart settings we?ve engineered into our newest OptiPlex desktop had been available on each desktop we?ve shipped over the past year, those customers could have saved enough electricity to power about 1.5 million U.S. homes for one year."

Dell says that the focus on efficiency stems from the company's commitment to the environment, which may well be true, but it also fits naturally with Dell's commitment to low prices. In this case, cost savings are found after the sale, but that doesn't mean they are any less important, especially to enterprises running entire data centers.

Regarding the environment, it's heartening to see tech companies taking responsibility for the recycling of their products, and Dell has been including such free recycling with its computers for some time. The recycling program aims to recover 275,000,000 pounds of equipment by 2009—nearly one pound for every American.
